MED Autumn Sale – October 2nd 2013

Report:

Over 70 calves were sold. As previously stated the sale was badly hit by the quarantine restrictions on some MED members farms due to a Bovine TB outbreak. At least another 70 calves were to present in the sale.

Sale Averages:

Bull Calves: 394.95kgs average weight and  achieved €925.59 average price. – 530.64 over the weight.

Heifer Calves: 423kgs average weight and achieved €978.50 average price – 555.50 over the weight.

Average weights and prices were up on 2012 and surprisingly heifer calves outperformed bull calves at the sale.

MED members Jonathan Mc Elwaine and Gerry Carty deserve a special mention on the quality of the heifer calves they brought to the sale.

A heifer belonging to MED member Hugh Mc Garrigle achieved the top price prize weighing in at 610kgs and selling for €1,450.00.

MED member Andrew Mc Shea deserves a special mention on the quality of the bull calves he brought to the sale.

MED member Joe Herity achieved the top price for a Bull Calf weighing in at 525kgs and selling for €1,335.00.

Sale averages per Kg were above the national average based on the Irish Farmers journal figures week ending 12/10/2013.

Even though numbers were slightly down, all who attended agreed it was a good sale and were very happy at the prices achieved.
